Top 10 Most Fun Commanders of 2026

Hello fellow nerds! It’s March 2026, the new brackets are in full effect, Lorwyn Eclipsed just flipped the script on faeries and -1/-1 counters, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles precons are still selling out LGS tables, and Final Fantasy cards from late 2025 are STILL breaking brains. Commander has never been more unhinged in the best way. If you're anything like me, new commanders are always an opportunity for a new deck and I like to choose cards that seem to be the most fun. Here’s my completely subjective opinion for the top 10 Most Fun Commanders to play in 2026 — ranked 10 to 1. Every single one turns games into stories your group will still be quoting in 2027. These commanders can be built on any bracket level and will create memorable moments at the kitchen table. I'll add some some spicy synergies or pet cards, and a one-sentence deck hook.

#10 - Hope Estheim

Hope Estheim

This guy is death by a thousand paper cuts… except the paper is your opponents’ libraries and the cuts are lifegain triggers on your turn. The whole table is hoping for you to die during the slow-motion mill apocalypse. Pure comedy gold when someone finally realizes they’ve been milled out while you’re at 47 life.

Key synergies/pet cards: Leonardo, Cutting Edge comes down early to get your life gain engine rolling and Will, Scion of Peace is a perfect fit because we want to gain the most life on our turn. A well timed Space-Time Anomaly could remove someone from the game without turning any creatures sideways. The Gaffer can help with card advantage and Serra Ascendant becomes even scarier.

Deck idea: A themed Final Fantasy “library hate” mill deck that still gains 20 life a turn and makes everyone laugh at tiny libraries.

Leonardo, Cutting Edge
Will, Scion of Peace
Space-Time Anomaly
The Gaffer
Serra Ascendant

#9 – Garnet, Princess of Alexandria

Garnet, Princess of Alexandria

Sagas that trigger dice rolls, random effects, and storybook chaos? Garnet turns every game into a Final Fantasy side-quest where nobody knows what’s happening next — including you. The dice clacking and “wait, did that saga just give me a dragon?” moments are chef’s kiss.

key synergies/pet cards: Garnet wants us to stop from reaching the final chapter of a saga so we can continue to gain value from the early chapters. Adept Watershaper is a great card that comes out the turn after Garnet does to ensure that she can swing safely. Saga creatures like Summon: Yojimbo are excellent additions because we can keep them around as creatures and continually get their value. An enchantress package with cards like Mesa Enchantress is key here for card advantage and a solid lieutenant in the form of Yuna, Hope of Spira will ensure that any sacrificed sagas can get another go.

Deck Idea: Run no artifacts and go all out on an enchantment heavy deck that laughs at the need for a sol ring.

Adept Watershaper
Summon: Yojimbo
Mesa Enchantress
Yuna, Hope of Spira
Eidolon of Blossoms

#8 – Captain Howler, Sea Scourge

Captain Howler, Sea Scourge

A shark pirate that gives anyone’s creature +2/+0 at instant speed if you discard? Politics, betrayal, and “I see you have attacked Adam, allow me to buff it” moments every turn. The table becomes a pirate sitcom.

Key synergies/pet cards: instant speed discard from effects like Thirst for Identity and Frantic Search will allow us to be political with Captain Howler's triggered ability. Filling the deck with wheel effects makes the Locust God particularly potent. Raking Claws can chunk a life total out of nowhere. Hobgoblin, Mantled Marauder doubles up our commander's ability for big swings.

Deck Idea: Wheel through your whole deck trying to boot your opponents out by buffing their creatures.

Thirst for Identity
Frantic Search
The Locust God
Raking Claws
Hobgoblin, Mantled Marauder

#7 – Cloud, Ex-SOLDIER

Cloud, Ex-SOLDIER

Go-wide equipment that draws cards when you spread the gear around? Cloud makes every creature a potential MVP. Who will it be this game? Guess we will find out. The beauty is in the unknown.

Key Synergies/pet cards: When you have a go-wide strategy, multiple combats are strong. Raph and Leo, Sibling Rivals and Karlach, Fury of Avernus are likely hero candidates to suit up. Add whatever equipment you want but use cards like Danitha Capishen, Paragon to ease equip costs. A lieutenant in the form of Barret, Avalanche Leader checks every box. Ramp with creatures like Birds of Paradise to have equip targets early.

Deck Idea: Try to wipe out your opponents with a creature card that costs less than a dollar.

Raph & Leo, Sibling Rivals
Karlach, Fury of Avernus
Danitha Capashen, Paragon
Barret, Avalanche Leader
Birds of Paradise

#6 – Gogo, Master of Mimicry

Gogo, Master of Mimicry

Gogo challenges the notion that EDH is a singleton format. With this commander you can have essentially as many copies of your cards that you can pay mana for. The scaling of its ability and the likely need for a calculator seems hilarious.

Key Synergies/pet cards: Gogo's ability is pretty mana hungry, so hold onto High Tide for an explosive turn. High Fae Trickster allows the deck to keep mana up for the right moment to go off. The best abilities to copy are passive triggered abilities that save mana like Malcolm, Alluring Scoundrel and Aboleth Spawn. I'd say this might just be the best home for the Millennium Calendar.

Deck Idea: Only alternate win conditions

High Tide
High Fae Trickster
Malcolm, Alluring Scoundrel
Aboleth Spawn
The Millennium Calendar

#5 – Dark Leo and shredder

Dark Leo & Shredder

Imagine turning the act of declaring blockers into an absolute nightmare. Do your best poker face while your opponent squirms at the thought of what might come out of your hand next, or hang their head when they decide to block your 1/1 deathtouch creature and you laugh with no effects.

Key Synergies/pet cards: Ninja's are key here so be sure to include some sneak and ninjutsu creatures like Splinter, Hamato Yoshi and Biting-Palm Ninja. Delney, Streetwise Lookout and MacCready, Lamplight Mayor will ensure that your ninja's get through for our commanders triggered ability. Finish off an opponent instantly with Bloodletter of Aclazotz.

Deck Idea: Build a deck that renders the declare blockers step useless

Splinter, Hamato Yoshi
Biting-Palm Ninja
Delney, Streetwise Lookout
MacCready, Lamplight Mayor
Bloodletter of Aclazotz

#4 – Kilo, Apogee Mind

Kilo, Apogee Mind

High power proliferation that doesn’t need the usual suspects to pop off. The “oops I accidentally made a 50/50 flyer on turn 5” moments never get old.

Key Synergies/pet cards: Kilo doesn't need to attack to proliferate. Lets get double value out of the station mechanic with Inspirit, Flagship Vessel and Dawnsire, Sunstar Dreadnought. Ramp up the counter placement with Ioreth of the Healing House and Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus. Use clones that ignore the legendary creature rule like Sakashima the Imposter and Spark Double to pile up those counters.

Deck Idea: Use spacecrafts to obliterate your opponents

Inspirit, Flagship Vessel
Dawnsire, Sunstar Dreadnought
Ioreth of the Healing House
Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus
Sakashima the Impostor

#3 – ragost, deft gastronaut

Ragost, Deft Gastronaut

It's Boros so it must be a combat deck. right? wrong. Cook up your opponents sous vide with this deft chef that plays with his food. Serve up some grief while taking game actions on everyone's turns.

Key synergies/pet cards: Since all of our artifacts will be foods, we want to dish out value when they get sacrificed. Mouser Foundry and Prized Statue give value as they come and go. Scrap Trawler keeps the grill cooking. Treasure Nabber lets us take our opponent's artifacts and and peel them off the battlefield. Finish off the table by putting cards like Weftstalker Ardent A la carte.

Deck Idea: Build a Boros deck that wins with no combat damage

Mouser Foundry
Prized Statue
Scrap Trawler
Treasure Nabber
Weftstalker Ardent

#2 - Noctis prince of lucis

Noctis, Prince of Lucis

I'll admit that I am not a huge fan of artifact decks but when I see the word "graveyard" on a commander I lock in. Have the most fun at the table until your opponents start pulling cards out of their decks to add graveyard hate.

Key synergies/pet cards: Let's start with the recently unbanned gifts ungiven which is essentially a tutor for 4 cards. The cards we cast out of the graveyard enter with a finality counter so ensure instant value with cards like Cyberdrive Awakener and thought monitor. Entomb becomes an instant speed tutor and Grinding Station can act as a sacrifice outlet and mill engine on ourselves.

Deck idea: Glass cannon deck that aggressively mills itself and wins with a tiny library

Gifts Ungiven
Cyberdrive Awakener
Thought Monitor
Entomb
Grinding Station

#1 - Abigale, Eloquent First-Year

Abigale, Eloquent First-Year

Opponent's won't know what to think of Abigale. Is it voltron? control? blink? Players will be baffled when you turn their commanders into indestructible duds or turn unplayable creatures into win-cons.

Key synergies/pet cards: Render the tables commanders useless with Abigale and cards like Darksteel Mutation. Jam the deck with blink effects like Ephemerate and Cloudshift to abuse Abigale's ability and delete downsides of your own creatures like phyrexian soulgorger and Abyssal Persecutor.

Deck Idea: Super fast tricky deck with only 4 converted mana cost creatures or less

Darksteel Mutation
Ephemerate
Cloudshift
Phyrexian Soulgorger
Abyssal Persecutor

Writer and member of Nerd leagues. I started playing Magic in 2013 when a couple of my friends visited me and taught me how to play. We soon after picked up on the commander format and have played it ever since. This website started as spreadsheet that we kept track of our games on and has evolved into this website. Our passions for the game run deep.
