MTG Reality Fracture: Release Date, Story & Everything We Know

Reality Fracture releases worldwide on October 2, 2026, and Wizards is billing it as the set where "the Multiverse meets its match." It's the climactic finale of the three-year Metronome Arc — and the threat isn't an invading army this time. It's Jace Beleren.

Reality Fracture introduces Jace's Echoverse: an alternate reality filled with warped "what if" versions of characters and spells you already know. Think a red Snapcaster Mage (Stingcaster Mage), an ice-cold blue Chandra (Chandra, Chill of Compliance), and a Liliana who never suffered any of her tragedies (Liliana the Faultless).

The set leans hard on pairs. The first previews showed the Lorwyn 5 — Magic's original 2007 planeswalkers — each appearing as both their true self and an Echoverse mirror, with Jace as the lone exception because he's the architect of the whole thing. Even non-planeswalkers get the treatment: Tinybones, Pocket Nuisance has a giant-sized mirror in Titanbones, Towering Heart. It ships the day after Mystery Booster: Commander Edition (October 1), making early October a brutal week for wallets.

Reality Fracture closes out the Metronome Arc, the multi-year storyline running from Wilds of Eldraine through Tarkir: Dragonstorm and beyond. The through-line has been Jace's obsession with the Omenpaths — the gateways connecting the planes since March of the Machine — and his plans to "fix" the Multiverse on his own terms.

That's why the set's villain card is The Theorist, Jace Beleren, a mythic planeswalker whose new title has literally replaced his name on the card frame. Whatever Jace has been building toward since his failed ritual on Tarkir comes to a head here.

Wizards has confirmed or shown three mechanical pillars so far:

• Echoed pairs. Product previews confirm every booster contains an echoed pair — the two-sided character gimmick baked directly into how packs are collated.
• Exhaust returns. First seen in Aetherdrift, Exhaust abilities can be activated only once per game. Liliana the Repentant carries one that reanimates a creature or planeswalker.
• Prepared Spells return. The double-faced uncommon cycle — cards like Prudent Fateseer // Peer Review and Vigorbloom Vanguard // Seed Suture — brings back the Prepared Spells design from Secrets of Strixhaven, signposting the set's Limited archetypes.

Collectors also have a marquee chase: Bloodline Recollector // Ancestral Craving gets a serialized throwback full-art treatment limited to 500 copies, illustrated by Power Nine artist Mark Poole. Shattered mirror cards and other special treatments round out the collector side.

Unlike most premier sets, Reality Fracture ships with a single Commander precon: Multiverse Reforged, themed around Jace's Echoverse. It contains 18 new-to-Magic cards alongside 88 reprints, and lead designer Gavin Verhey has said the single-deck approach let the team build something genuinely unusual rather than retreading familiar themes — including characters who can't appear in the main set.

The first card from it leaked at Amsterdam: Darksteel Angel, a nine-mana indestructible 4/4 flier that says you can't lose the game and your opponents can't win it. Cautiously, yes. Event sets that close a story arc tend to swing big — March of the Machine reshaped the Multiverse, and this one is aiming at the same scale. The early cards skew powerful, planeswalker-heavy, and very Commander-friendly, and the echoed-pair gimmick gives the set an identity beyond "big finale."
