Top 5 Commanders From Magic: the Gathering's new Marvel Super Heroes Set
Top 5 Commanders From Marvel superheroes
Marvel Superheroes is Magic's newest set and it is an EDH enjoyer's playground. The set revolves around Marvels most iconic heroes and villains giving us access to a plethora of new possibilities. At the time of writing this there have been a whopping 128 legendary creatures spoiled, and their rarities span from uncommon to mythic. It's going to be a tall task but I'm going to showcase 5 that give me inspiration for new deck ideas.
#5: The unbeatable squirrel girl
This is the squirrel commander we have all been looking for. Squirrels first appeared in the Weatherlight set back in 1999 through a card called Liege of the Hollows. Since then we have gotten a trickling of cards that support the creature type but nowhere near the same treatment that others like goblins or elves have received. Now we have a commander that can match Krenko, Mob Boss in its ability to flood the board with 1/1's. There's not too much to say in terms of strategy here, just churn out as many squirrels as you can with big mana and enchantments like Parallel Lives then finish off the table with a craterhoof Behemoth or Overrun effect. Go nuts!
#4: Thanos, the mad titan
This card wins on flavor alone. His power-up ability will allow you to "snap" away each other creature with odd or even mana values. This card says you can only use this ability once but with access to white mana we can just ephemerate this mad titan to reset it. Phase out your own board with cards like Galadriel's dismissal before you snap to really turn the table in your favor or just have Avacyn, Angel of Hope protecting you. I envision adding ping effects to him like fire whip to eliminate high priority targets because of his deathtouch. You can build the deck to contain a lot of control, or make it creature heavy that sleeves up only odd or even mana value creatures making the power-up ability one sided. This deck should truly embrace the villain role.
#3: Captain America, living legend
I had to read this card a few times to make sure that I was reading it correctly. Every creature on your board has the ability to tap twice during your turn. Surely this can't get powerful. On the surface it kind of reads like "creatures you control have vigilance" but that is narrow thinking. Blue and white have access to creatures that can tap for value and now we can tap them twice. Mana dorks like Ornithopter of Paradise now produce twice as much mana during your turn. This could give Arcanis the Omnipotent a comeback because now we can get 6 cards from him per turn. Ioreth of the Healing House will really get the untapping party started. You could even go all in on a milling strategy with Persistent Petitioners getting twice the amount. There seems to be a variety of different ways to build this version of Cap and I'm here for it.
#2: Thor odinson
I absolutely love the design of this card. I envision the prowess triggers as lightning growing around him. This deck wants to pump up Thor in a huge way and swing in with his flying evasion. How you trigger prowess is up to you. You could go with equipment spells like The Reaver Cleaver or Embercleave to make quick work of your opponents. You could also go the route of cheap cantrips like Rebellious Strike and Crimson wisps. Boros is great at pushing through massive combat damage so I feel like a combination of strategies is the best route to take.
#1: Bruce banner
There are two basic strategies in Magic that will win you the game more often than not. Draw the most cards, and swing with the most damage. This commander will help you do both. I like cheap commanders that come in and provide early game value. Bruce Banner's ability scales well as a game progresses ensuring that you don't have leftover mana. With access to Gruul colors you can ramp up mana quickly and become the Incredible Hulk in no time. Enable extra combats with Hulk by using instants during combat like Gutshot. Fight spells like Prizefight can remove a creature while also giving you extra combat steps. Your opponents will likely absorb the hit to prevent extra combats so use it to your advantage and cast Hunter's Insight. Wipe out an opponents board with Roar of Challenge and once The Incredible Hulk accumulates some counters cast a Chandra's Ignition to flip the game on its head. Hulk smash!
